The Havránok Archaeological Open-Air Museum is one of the exhibitions of the Liptov
Museum, a unique archaeological museum located on the shores of the Liptovská Mara
Reservoir. This magical place with a rich history is one of the most significant archaeological
sites in Slovakia and visiting it is a magnificent experience for lovers of history, nature, and
adventure.
The archaeological open-air museum documents the presence of a Celtic settlement in the
Liptov region from the 4th to the 1st century BC. Archaeological excavations have uncovered
the remains of a settlement from the Late Iron Age, also known as the La Tène period. The
Celts are the first historically known inhabitants of Slovakia that we can name. The Liptov
Celts were part of the Cotini tribe.
Extensive findings suggest that the Havránok settlement was of supra-regional importance.
Among the most significant discoveries are pottery, jewellery, iron and bronze objects, as
well as the remains of a fortification, a worship site of the ancient druids and Celtic dwellings.
Havránok is exceptional because it applies experimental archaeology. Instead of the
traditional method of preserving excavations, creative reconstructions and replicas of the
original buildings have been made. As a result, it became the first Slovak open-air
archaeological park. Visitors can admire reconstructed Celtic dwellings, ramparts with a gate,
a kiln for firing pottery and an sacrificial site.
During the summer season, the Archaeological Open-Air Museum comes to life with various
cultural events. The programme often includes fencing performances, demonstrations of
Celtic religious rites, ancient crafts and interactive presentations about the life of the Celts.
The Havránok Archaeological Open-Air Museum is an ideal trip for families, schools, and
those who want to learn about the ancient history of Liptov and the Celtic settlements of
Slovakia.
