Do you know who was called “the Apollo of Kysuce”?
It was American astronaut of Slovak origin Eugene Andrew Cernan, whose grandparents left
Vysoká nad Kysucou to work in America. He flew on three space missions and is known as
the last human to walk on the Moon.
In his honour, the village of Vysoká nad Kysucou established a memorial room, which
Cernan personally opened during his second visit to Slovakia in 1994. Present at the opening
were his sister Dolores and his daughter Tracy. The E. A. Cernan Memorial Room is located
in the Municipal Office building in Vysoká nad Kysucou. The interior was designed
graphically and aesthetically by the academic painter Miroslav Cipár. The walls of the room
are covered with period photographs of Kysuce and documents relating to Cernan’s life. The
room also includes parts of the Apollo 17 spacecraft.
The E. A. Cernan Memorial Room can be visited on weekdays from 07:15 to 15:15, or on
other days by prior arrangement, which can be booked through the Mayor’s office at +421
905 884 634 or by email: sekretariat@vysokanadkysucou.sk .
Tip!
On the village square you can also take a look at the unique sundial, which is particularly
interesting due to its original operating principle. Unlike traditional sundials, which use a fixed
pole or rod to indicate the time, the sundial in Vysoká nad Kysucou uses the observer's
shadow for the same purpose
How to get there?
