Burian’s Tower

Upper Povazie

Burian’s Tower is not a classic observation tower. It stands in the centre of Žilina, next to the
Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. In the past, it served as both bell tower and observation post
intended to protect against fires and enemy incursions. Its fate is associated with Burian
Svetlovský, the owner of Strečno Castle from 1526 to 1529 and mayor of Žilina at the time.
The tower has undergone several reconstructions. During the last one, in 1941, a viewing
terrace was added. It is currently open to the public, with half-hour tours organised by the
Žilina Tourist Information Office. It is therefore necessary to book your visit in advance. The
46 m high tower guarantees a unique view of the city and its surroundings.
