Veľký Kriváň (1,709 m above sea level) is the highest peak of the Malá Fatra mountain range
and is regarded as one of its most beautiful summits. For hikers, the ascent is an irresistible
treat. The views from the top are truly worth it.
The trail from the lower cable car station provides an excellent hiking experience and
beautiful views of the surrounding area. The ascent beneath the cable car up to Snilovské
Saddle (Snilovské sedlo) is challenging in terms of elevation gain and is intended mainly for
more experienced hikers. Those less fit can take the cable car to the saddle. From Snilovské
Saddle, the trail to the summit of Veľký Kriváň leads through the Malá Fatra ridge and, even
though it is not a long or time-consuming section, it is always necessary to take into account
the changeable weather and the wind, which blows quite often on the ridge. We recommend
doing the hike only when the weather is favourable. The trail is passable even in winter; it is
marked with winter pole markings, and we recommend using crampons and trekking poles.
How to get there?
An easier route from Vrátna is by taking the cable car to Snilovské Saddle. From there, a red
hiking trail leads to the top. The ascent will take you no more than 45 minutes.
A more demanding hiking route from Vrátna follows the green-marked trail under the cable
car up to Snilovské Saddle, from where you can continue to the summit along the red ridge
trail.
Parking
A parking lot is located at the lower station of the cable car to Chleb.
