Crossing the Veľká Fatra Mountains

Turiec

Over the course of two days, this moderately difficult ridge hike in the most beautiful part of the Veľká Fatra Mountains will take you to five peaks: Kráľova studňa, Krížna, Ostredok, Ploská and Borišov. Its difficulty stems from its length rather than the ruggedness of the terrain. This trail is very popular among hikers, mainly because it leads through an unusually diverse mountain landscape and across the most beautiful section of the Veľká Fatra ridge between Krížna and Borišov. Only the initial ascent to the ridge is relatively challenging. From Krížna to Ploská, the trail remains at an altitude of over 1,300 m, descending slightly below this limit in places on the way to Borišov. Trail marking is mostly logical and understandable.
We recommend splitting the route over two days, with an overnight stay at the cottage below Borišov. When crossing the Veľká Fatra ridge, hikers usually spend the night near Suchý vrch, Ploská, or Borišov. Besides this cottage, there are several more or less preserved huts and shepherd shelters below Ploská, Chyžky and Suchý vrch, where it is possible to take shelter from bad weather and spend the night. However, you should not have high expectations. They are just modest cabins for undemanding tourists and without great thermal comfort. If you want to enjoy the hike at a slower pace and spread your energy more evenly, you can stretch it over two nights and three days. On the first day, you can easily reach Kráľova studňa and stay overnight at a hotel; on the second day, continue along the ridge to Borišov with an overnight at the cottage; and on the third day, descend through Belianska Valley (Belianska dolina) to the village of Belá – Dulice.

How to get there?
The trail starts in Horný Harmanec. The ascent from Harmanec to the hotel under Kráľová studňa takes just over 3 hours and follows an asphalt road. There are waterfalls and cascades in the surrounding area. If you are a fan of stargazing, the area around Kráľova studňa is home to the Veľká Fatra – Kráľova studňa Dark Sky Park, which offers excellent conditions for astronomical observation. The ascent from Kráľova studňa to Krížna is occasionally more challenging, but from there the trail follows the ridge without difficult sections all the way to the hut below Borišov. From Borišov, descend to Havranov and continue through Belianska Valley to the village of Belá – Dulice. A highlight of the route is a small but beautiful multi-tiered waterfall in Došná, which can be reached in 25 minutes from Havranovo via the yellow trail.

Parking
There is a paid public parking lot at the beginning of the trail leading to Harmanec Cave (Harmanecká jaskyňa).
