Roháče Tarns

Orava

The route around Roháče Tarns is one of the most attractive trails in Roháče. The density of the tarns and the photogenic character of the landscape make this circuit one of the most popular and well-known hikes in the Orava region of the Western Tatras.
The Roháče Tarns (Roháčske plesá) consist of 6 lakes of glacial origin. They are located in Roháče Valley (Roháčska dolina) and are unique in that they are significantly lower than the lakes in the High Tatras. The largest tarn has a depth of 7 metres and an area of 2.22 ha. The educational trail will lead you directly to them. This moderately difficult trail is also popular with families with children and continues to the Roháče Waterfall (Roháčsky vodopád). The reward will be beautiful natural panoramas and striking scenery.
The trail starts in the car park and follows the red route through Roháče Valley along an asphalt road to the cottage by Ťatliak Lake (Ťatliakovo jazero). From the cottage, a gentle ascent follows along the green-marked hiking trail. After approximately 50 minutes, you will reach the Greater Roháče Tarn (Veľké Roháčske pleso), which is the largest. A gradual climb will lead to the Second Roháče Tarn (Druhé Roháčske pleso), near which lies the Third Roháče Tarn (Tretie Roháčske pleso). The final ascent will take you to the Fourth Roháče Tarn (Štvrté Roháčske pleso), which is located at the foot of the Tri Kopy summit. The trail then descends in switchbacks along the blue-marked trail to Spálená Valley (Spálená dolina), along Zelené pliesko (literally “Small Green Tarn”), around the 18 m high Roháče Waterfall to the Adamcuľa junction, where it connects to an asphalt road leading to the parking lot. This trail can also be taken in the opposite direction. If you prefer a steep ascent and a gradual descent, choose the opposite direction to ascend around the Roháče Waterfall through Spálená Valley to the tarns. If you are a family with children, we recommend the section of the trail around Ťatliak’s Cottage, which features a gentle ascent suitable for
younger hikers.
