One of the most popular routes leads along the Javorník ridge to its highest peak, Veľký Javorník and offers several descent options depending on the physical condition and preferences of hikers. In winter, the route is machine-groomed for cross-country skiing as part of the Beskids-Javorníky Cross-Country Skiing Trail. At the end of 2022, cycling signs were added to this route. The advantage of the route is the pleasant and unpretentious terrain without significant elevation gains, which leads alternately through meadows, spruce forests and clearings.
Melocík is a popular starting point for this route, partly because it can be reached by bus on the route from Bytča to Makov. From the summit of Čerenka, where the lift of Makov ski resort ends, you can see both the Lúka and the Kriváň section of the Malá Fatra Mountains on one side and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids with Lysá Mountain and Smrk on the opposite side. The route through the Kysuce settlements is enriched with works of art as part of the Gallery in Nature and also leads through the well-known settlement of Greguše, where you can admire beautiful original cottages and a bell tower. The very top of Veľký Javorník offers beautiful views and, on clear days, it is possible to see the Western Tatras. The destination point of the Makov-Kasárne route is located directly below the summit of Veľký Javorník. If you want to extend the route, you can continue along the red trail from Gežov Saddle, which will lead you to the lookout tower at Stratenec and from there to the village of Podjavorník.
