Evangelical Articular Church in Svätý Kríž

Liptov

Wooden churches are a distinctive feature of sacred architecture and continue to possess
undeniable charm. Above all, however, they have great historical significance and are of
invaluable cultural and spiritual value. The so-called articular churches, such as the
Evangelical Articular Church in the village of Svätý Kríž (literally “Holy Cross”), were built on
the basis of the so-called Articles, that is, the legal provisions issued by Emperor Leopold I at
the end of the 17th century.
Originally, this church, built after 1693 and extended in 1774, was located in the village of
Paludza, but when the village was flooded during the construction of the Liptovská Mara
Reservoir (1974 – 1982), it was relocated to the village of Svätý Kríž. It is located
approximately 9 km from the town of Liptovský Mikuláš. After 1781, a wooden belfry was
added to the church, forming a harmonious whole with the building.
The church was built to serve five thousand members of the parish and undoubtedly ranks
among the largest wooden structures in Central Europe. The floor plan of the church has the
shape of a cross and a length of 43 m. However, it impresses visitors above all with its
unique Baroque interior. Here, you can find, for example, a wooden Baroque altar from 1753
featuring a painting of the Transfiguration of Christ. Equally remarkable are the pulpit, which
stands on a log base and appears to be supported by a Baroque angel, the organ, the stone
baptismal font and the paintings depicting biblical scenes.
Thanks to 75 windows, a Venetian glass chandelier and reflections of light in the interior, this
church offers a unique atmosphere and an indescribable experience.
How to get there?
The church is located at the end of the village of Svätý Kríž. A well-trodden path surrounds
the building. We recommend walking along this path in order to view the entire unique
structure. The Liptov Cycling Route passes through Svätý Kríž, making the church easily
accessible by bicycle. From Demänová Valley (Demänovská dolina), the church can be
reached via a dirt road from Pavčina Lehota.
Parking
There is a small parking lot just a few metres from the church.
