Kľak in the Veľká Fatra Mountains is less known than its namesake in the Malá Fatra Mountains, although it lies on the Veľká Fatra ridge trail and, at 1,394 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Turiec section of the ridge. It is accessible from several locations via marked hiking trails, but none of the trails avoid a steep climb to the summit. However, you will be rewarded with gorgeous views from the sprawling and more or less peaceful summit, where you will not encounter crowds of tourists. You can enjoy views of the Malá Fatra Mountains, including Kľak, the Veľká Fatra Mountains, and the Turiec Basin, as well as Veľký Choč, the Low Tatras, and, on clear days, even the High Tatras and Kriváň.
How to get there?
The ascent from Sklabinský Podzámok along the yellow trail takes about 4.5 hours. If you park your car in Kaplná, you will save 45 minutes and a little over 2.5 km. If you do not want to return the same way, you can descend along the blue trail to Podhradie. The 8 km descent will take you approximately 2 hours.
Parking
A small parking area is available near Kaplná, before the entry ban into Kľak Valley or alternatively in the village itself. The village does not have an official parking lot.
