At the heart of the beautiful environment of the Brestová, in the foothills of the majestic
Western Tatras, lies the open-air museum of Orava village – a unique outdoor museum that
authentically captures traditional life in Orava. In an area of 8 hectares, there are 54 historical
objects of folk architecture, carefully relocated from various Orava villages and arranged into
thematic groups.
Walk through the Lower Orava Market Square, explore the Upper Orava street, discover the
charm of Goral hamlets and visit the typical wooden church with a cemetery. The exhibition
features a working water mill that is powered by a nearby mountain stream. Each building is
furnished and decorated in an authentic period style to give visitors an accurate picture of life
in Orava in the past.
In addition to the buildings themselves, visitors can explore authentic rural surroundings –
agricultural fields, pastures, gardens, and meadows. The exhibition also includes an
agricultural and zoological section, where visitors can learn more about traditional crop
cultivation and livestock breeding in the Orava region.
The Orava village open-air museum is not limited to the past. Throughout the year, in
summer and winter, thematic events, craft workshops, folklore performances and many other
experiential programmes for children and adults take place there.
Discover the rich cultural heritage of Orava and experience the atmosphere of a traditional
Slovak village as our ancestors knew it. Visit the Museum of the Orava Village, a place
where history comes to life in the heart of nature.
