Prosiek and Kvačany Valleys (Prosiecka and Kvačianska dolina) are among the most visited
locations in Liptov. Due to their accessibility, they are especially popular with families with
children. The valleys are connected by a circular educational trail. The most important
attractions of this trail include the Red Sand Waterfall (vodopád Červené piesky) at the end
of Prosiek Valley, Ráztocký Waterfall and the unique Oblazy Water Mills, as well as scenic
viewpoints of Malý Roháč and Kobyliny in Kvačany Valley. The Oblazy Water Mills are a
technical monument from the 19th century and are the main attraction of the trail.
How to get there?
The hike begins and ends in the village of Prosiek, located north of the Liptovská Mara
Reservoir. The circular trail starts at the parking area at the end of the village. The trail goes
through Prosiek Valley, flanked by rock formations, some connected by steel ladders. Along
the way, you can visit the Red Sand Waterfall (vodopád Červené piesky), cross the Svorad
Plateau (planina Svorad), pass through the village of Veľké Borové and follow a gorge to the
unique Oblazy Water Mills. They are 19th-century technical monuments maintained by
volunteers. From Oblazy, the route returns through Kvačany Valley to Kvačany, crossing the
gorge, where you should not miss the views of the valley and surrounding mountains from
the lookout built on a rocky cliff. From Kvačany, the trail leads beneath the mountain back to
Prosiek.
If you feel like taking a shorter route, choose a walk through Kvačany Valley to the water
mills. The ascent from the parking area at the entrance to Kvačany Valley takes about 1.5
hours.
You can also take the circular route starting in Kvačany Valley, which can be hiked in either
direction.
Useful information
There are several wooden bridges and steel ladders along the trail through Prosiek Valley
and some sections are secured with chains and footholds, so we do not recommend bringing
your dog.
Parking
Public paid parking lots are located before the entrance to both valleys.
